Classic Car of the Week: DeSoto Hardtop (1961)

My pick of the week is the 1961 DeSoto Hardtop.

The '61 Hardtop represented the end of an era for the DeSoto range. The range was shrunk down to the two options of a 2-door and a 4-door hardtop of a similar design to the 1960 Fireflite with the exception of the two tier grille design and slanted double headlights. The decision to discontinue production came at the end of November, followed by a scramble as dealers tried to sell off what remained of their stock.

The final DeSoto rolled off production lines selling at an average of $3134, though in reality this was probably much less as dealers trying to get rid of stock frequently sold models at a loss. Available in 13 colours but bells and whistles were sparse in comparison to some of it's competitors with even the addition of a radio and variable speed wipers coming as a priced optional extra.

The final models were sold over the December 1961 leaving DeSoto fans looking back on better days.
