10 best car ads from the noughties

It is my humble opinion that the noughties were some of the best years for creative car ads on our telly. Puppets, giant cakes, giant robots and very satisfying chain reactions are just some of the ways that motor markets tried to tempt us with their latest models, all appealing to our inner kid. Here's a list of some of my picks of the decade.

1. Citroen - "Transformer"

It's horrible to have to admit that a car has better moves than you do on the dance floor but let's face it, the C4bot had more than a little help from Marty Kudelka, none other than Justin Timberlake's own choreographer and a good handful of digital animation artists who combined motion capture techniques.

More after the jump

2. Skoda - "Cake"

The question on everyone's lips: 'Was the cake real?' Well, yes it was apparently. It was lovingly created over four days, all except for the krispie doors which were made a week prior to filming. The plan was to give the cake away to charity but after days baking under hot studio lights, the finished product was no where near as delicious as it looked. It was composted instead. A shame really...

3. Volkswagen - "Singing in the Rain"

Another one of those 'how did they do that?' moments here, as we are treated to Gene Kelly break dancing through the set of Singin' in the Rain. This was pulled off with very clever tech and a meticulous attention to detail on the set designers' part. Oh and yes, those dance moves were performed by a human being. Yes, really.

4. Vauxhall - "Little Dads"

There's something about kid's imitating their parents which strikes a chord with most folk and this is no different. Maybe it's the fact that a lot of what they say is all too familiar...

5. Peugeot - "The Sculptor"

Well, that's one way to mod your car I suppose and let's face it, it looks like good fun. The elephant on the bonnet was a particularly nice touch too. In fact, this ad won the title of 'The Nation's Favourite Ad' as polled by BBC radio 4.

6. Honda - "Grrr"

What's not to like about this? Bright and colourful, cute animals with a destructive streak, and a catchy song to boot. There is something very satisfying about how it all fits together too.

7. Vauxhall - "C'mon!"

Starring White, Blue, Red, Cherri and Moo, the knitted dolls who are all members of a band called The C'mons who's songs include 'C'mon', 'C'mon, C'mon', and 'C'mon, Yeah!' Well, whats' not to like about knitted dolls chasing a car across the city?

8. Honda - "Choir"

This is impressive by any one's standards. Filmed by the Holywood Film Chorale Sound Effects Choir in a car park, this lot are some seriously talented vocalists.

9. Vauxhall - "Hide and Seek"

A giant game of hide and seek but with cars. How much fun would this be to participate in?

10. Honda - "The Cog"

This is extremely satisfying to watch. It's like a giant game of mouse trap, only this actually works. There is a rather tense moment half way through where you find yourself willing it to work and to keep going. Powerful stuff indeed.
